A big fear about meditation

Many people resist meditation because they're afraid of what might "come up". Well, stuff is supposed to come up:

Spiritual progress is like detoxification. Things have to come up in order to be released. Once we have asked to be healed, then our unhealed places are forced to the surface.

--Marianne Williamson

Why would you prefer to have toxic stuff inside you that you don't even know about? Only if we know what's there can we do anything about it. Otherwise, it will rule our lives and we won't even understand why.

Some of us will need help in processing that stuff that comes up, which is why it's important to find a skillful and competent spiritual guide or mentor to help us with it...I have had several over the years, (including our dear Sister Ellie,) and highly recommend it...otherwise it can seem overwhelming.

  2. Hi Ellie, I can't figure out how to email you, I need your email address I think, so I'm at a loss. Anyway, are you a Sister in the Catholic Church? I was raised Catholic so I was just wondering. This blog seems like so much more. Also I couldn't agree with you more about this post. I was fortunate enough to have had a wonderful woman counselor, and yes, she was "sent" to me in my need. I feel in this life it's an awakening not lessons, but an awakening. Oh, and The Course In Miracles started me on this road many, many years ago...and it took me to places I never dreamed of and the start of the awakening. Here's how to get my email:

Go to the Center website right here:

St. John's Center for Spiritual Formation

Then click on "About the Director". My email is right on that page.

I don't want to give it to you here because there are machines that collect email addresses on blog posts and comments and then send people a huge amount of spam!

  4. Thanks for the comment, Annie. You are, of course, quite right about people sometimes needing to get some help about the stuff that comes up. Thanks for mentioning that!
