Ellie, the very same thing struck me back in Australia when I went to visit a particular place, just to commemorate living there, really, and the pet birds I kept there that I no longer have. But it was as if I couldn't get a handle on my feelings or grasp the memories and finally I realised that I couldn't really do that, not in the neat way I wanted, for the reason you have just given, that the moment won't stop.
